12" x 12" oil on wood panel
This painting is the first from a recent photo shoot I had with my friend and model extraordinaire, Caitie Marie. As I worked on this painting I began abstracting the environment, pushing it from the realism that she originally inhabited in the first pass of the painting. Things began deconstructing in the piece, with values and details merging into simplified design. While I don't want to drift too far into abstraction with my work, at least not yet, this did not feel like a major departure nor forced composition. As I worked, her repose lent itself to a narrative of dream states. Reality is breaking apart as she drifts into sleep. But whether it is a restful or fitful dream, that is up to the viewer to relate to.
