This painting marks an interesting point in my development. While I don't plan on changing away from representational art, I am drawn to the contemporary ideas of the physical qualities of the paint. Specifically, there is an underlying history to a painting. By this I don't mean from inception to completion, but the many layers that go into a painting. This is redundant and probably a non-issue for most painters, as they may be aware of it or it is simply a part of their process in such a way that they may not think about it. But being acutely aware of how many changes go into a work makes me as the creator more intimately connected to that work. It doesn't mean I want to hold onto it. Quite the opposite, I wish for it to hang in someone's home to be enjoyed. While I do try to tackle each painting with an idea, I think that explaining it to the viewer takes away from that experience. When I look at art I want to feel something, a connection between myself and the art and the artist. No explanations are needed.
